Ulrich “Uli” Krähenbühl, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and hot-air balloon pilot, passed away on May 12, 2012 in Boca Raton, Florida with his loving family by his side. 63 years young, Uli was a vibrant man who loved life and living so much that he courageously fought PMP cancer for 11 years. Uli is best remembered for his quirky and candid sense of humor, his love of life and his ingenious approach to problem solving. He was a mentor to dozens of individuals, guiding them in their professional and personal lives and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. A loving, devoted husband and father to three children, Uli brought tremendous joy, laughter and inspiration to those lucky enough to have known him. Born on June 13, 1948 in the Emmental area of Switzerland, Uli attended the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) where he earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation, Uli was employed by Hayek Engineering and worked directly under Nicholas Hayek Sr. who later went on to found the world’s largest watch company, Swatch Group LTD. Later, while living and working in Boston, MA for an engineering project, Uli met and married the love of his life, Shirley Anne Hogardt. Uli, his wife and his three children, Peter, Colette and Suzanne, lived in Montgomery Township, NJ for 24 years. During this time, he served as U.S. President of Sinar Bron, Inc., a high-end Swiss photography manufacturer, and then as U.S. President of Blaser Swisslube, a Swiss lubricant and machine tool company where he worked for the remainder of his life. During his employment at Blaser Swisslube, Uli discovered a lifelong passion for hot-air ballooning. Clocking almost 2,000 hours of flight time in his life, Uli participated in dozens of competitions around the world and enjoyed flying in locations such as Myanmar, Portugal, Brazil, Switzerland and Valley of the Gods, Utah. Over the course of his lifetime, Uli instructed and mentored dozens of hot-air balloon pilots. Never once complaining about his illness, Uli achieved more during his decade-long battle with cancer than some people accomplish in their entire lifetime. His favorite pastime was hot-air ballooning with friends and family as well as spending time at his vacation home in Hillsboro Beach, Florida, where the family shared many wonderful memories together. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Shirley Krähenbühl of Monroe Township, NJ and Hillsboro Beach, FL,; his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Sarah Krähenbühl of Phoenix, AZ; his daughters Colette Krähenbühl of Orlando, FL and Suzanne Krähenbühl of New York, NY; and siblings Hans Krähenbühl, Katharina Meister and Marianne Schüpbach of Switzerland.
